Overview
Greyfriars Vineyard produces spectacular English sparkling and still wines that reflect the special soil conditions, climate, and heritage of beautiful Surrey North Downs.
The estate has been one of the very first in England to plant traditional Champagne grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). Today, on their 40-acre vineyard, they also grow small plots of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Greyfriars Vineyard is proud winner of the Decanter World Wine award.
Newlands Corner
Newlands Corner is a 103-hectare (250-acre) nature reserve and a popular beauty spot that commands some of the best views over the Surrey HillsArea of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an area of open chalk downland with plenty of woodlands to explore, offering visitors spectacular views across the Weald the ridge of the South Downs.
The crime writer Agatha Christie staged her disappearance from Newlands Corner in 1926. Her car was found in a bush overhanging a chalk pit at Newlands Corner, at the bottom of the south side of the hill. She was found some days later having checked in under an alias at a hotel in Harrogate.
Shere
From all attractions in Surrey, Shere is one of the most visited villages in this county. This quintessentially English village offers visitors charming buildings, a stream with ducks, a small museum, a tearoom, and two pubs, as well as St James Church, a 12th century church. The church appeared in the Domesday Book. It contains a small, enclosed cell in which Christine Carpenter, an anchoress (religious recluse) lived. Her only contact with the outside world was through a grid and an aperture through which food was passed.
There are also some fantastic examples of Lutyens architecture here, too. One of the most notable examples is the Grade II listed White Gates, which was designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century. Other examples of his work in the village include the village hall and several private homes.
Shere has been used as a location for many films and TV shows, including Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Holiday, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Fans of these movies might recognize some of the landmarks in the village.
It is clear to see why Shere has been used as a location for many films.
Denbies Wine Estate
This international award-winning wine estate is one of England’s largest single estate vineyards. The estate has 627 acres, 200 of which are woodlands and includes 10 estate houses. With 265 acres currently under vine, the estate has a production capacity of one million bottles.
The location is spectacular, on the Surrey North Downs, in the town of Dorking, with its famous chalky soil, in a protected valley of south facing slopes.
Several members of the Royal family have visited the estate, completing the historical connections which date back to Prince Albert in 1851.
Denbies Wine Estate offers a variety of wine tastings and tours, which provide an opportunity to sample some of the estate’s award-winning wines. You can choose from a range of different tasting experiences, including guided tours, self-guided tours, and tastings paired with food.
